In an emotional yet decisive move, Southwest Airlines has announced its first major layoffs in 53 years, cutting 1,750 corporate jobs—15% of its workforce. The decision marks a turning point for the Dallas-based carrier as it seeks to streamline operations and adapt to a rapidly changing industry.

Southwest’s CEO, Bob Jordan, acknowledged the heavy toll this decision takes on the Southwest family. “This decision is unprecedented in our 53-year history, and change requires that we make difficult decisions,” he said. “I arrived at this decision thoughtfully and carefully, knowing how hard it will be to say goodbye to colleagues who have been a significant part of our Southwest culture.”

The layoffs, scheduled to begin in April and largely complete by the end of the second quarter, will focus solely on corporate positions and leadership roles. Notably, frontline employees pilots, flight attendants, and ground crews will not be affected, ensuring that everyday flight operations remain intact.

The restructuring is part of a broader strategy to build a leaner, faster, and more agile organization. Company officials estimate that the layoffs will yield savings of approximately $210 million in 2025 and $300 million in 2026. While the move comes with a one-time charge of $60 million to $80 million to cover severance and benefits, the long-term goal is to foster a more efficient organization that can better serve its customers and frontline employees.

Employees have expressed mixed emotions. Many feel the weight of losing long-held positions, while others understand the necessity behind the decision. In internal messages, leaders emphasized that the changes are intended to support future growth and stability. The restructuring comes at a time when the airline is navigating financial challenges and external pressures to evolve its operating model.

As Southwest Airlines embarks on this difficult transformation, the commitment to its storied history remains strong. The company’s focus is on honoring the legacy of its employees while building a future that meets the demands of modern air travel.
